LOR Rules Information (Ajax Minor Hockey Association)

PrintLOR Rules Information

Good Day AMHA Members

It’s that unique time in the season where for a brief moment focuses shift from the current 2017-2018 season to the upcoming season as teams in the Lake Ontario Region (LOR) begin plans for their upcoming 2018-2019 teams.

With this time also comes the unfortunate albeit inevitable questions pertaining to players and where they will play for next season.  In the interest of players and their families being able to shift their focus back to their current team, the Ajax Minor Hockey Association has compiled this brief communication in order to provide reiteration and clarity to the existing Lake Ontario regulations.

Tryout Requirements

Internal rules expect all players to start at AA tryouts.

·         Players who reside in AJAX from Minor Atom to Peewee MUST tryout for the Ajax Knights Hockey Clubs (LOR Regulation E48)

·         Players who reside in AJAX from Minor Atom to Peewee who are currently playing on a rep team outside of AJAX... MUST return and attend AMHA TRYOUTS . (LOR Regulation E50) (Exception for those players who were grandfathered)

·         At Minor Bantam through to Midget (with the exception of Midget AAA) the LOR is an open geographic subdivision. All players having graduated the PeeWee Division and above may move freely within the LOR with Permission to Skate forms. (LOR Regulation E52)

Tryout Conduct

·         Players who do not make themselves available for tryouts or who fail to show up to the majority of tryouts will not be provided a release. (LOR Regulation 59)

·         Players who attempt to disrespect the tryout process (be disruptive, do not listen to the instructors, etc.) or who deliberately “throw their tryout” (goalies attempting to play out, players using non-dominate hand etc.) will be reprimanded but still can be offered a card, remember the tryout process for the 2018-2019 season began at the start of the 2017-2018 season as some coaches watch other games.

Player Releases:

·         The AMHA have first right of refusal on Players who reside in AJAX from Minor Atom to Peewee.  Any AJAX player in these age groups will require a release from the AMHA before they are eligible to tryout with another team in the LOR. (LOR Regulation E53).

·         No releases for these age groups will be given PRIOR to 2018 spring tryouts

·         A player at Minor Atom to PeeWee who is provided a registration offer from a Team and does not accept it will not be provided a release for that Category. (LOR Regulation E59)

Rumours and Myths

Being the second year of implementation it is reasonable to expect that some information will be misconstrued and rumours or myths will develop as a result.  Below addresses some of the common ones that have been brought forward.

1. Sports Schools in GTHL

Myth: If I enroll my child in a sport school in the GTHL region, my child will be able to play in the GTHL as a non-import because they go to school in the GTHL region even if the family continues to reside in AJAX.

Truth: School enrollment has no impact on hockey registration.  Hockey registration is based solely on where the player resides, not where the player goes to school.  Players who reside in AJAX will not be entitled to a release because they have enrolled in schooling outside of AJAX.

2. Circumventing a specific division and category or specific Coach.

Myth: I can avoid playing for a certain coach or category (e.g. AA) by not attending the tryouts and declaring I only want to play at a certain level (e.g. AA instead of AAA, A instead of AA).

Truth:  This is still currently under review at the OMHA and OHF levels as it poses a threat to league imbalance. We expect all players to respect the internal rules of the AMHA so players can play at their proper level. It is expected that if a player is offered an “A” card by their home association at a specific category that player is only eligible to play at that category in representative hockey.  If the player refuses the position offered to them they will not have the option to play representative hockey at another category within their home centre and will not be entitled to a release to another LOR centre and will only be eligible to participate in House League hockey.

3. Grandfathering

Grandfathering was only good for the 2017-18 season.  All grandfathered players must return to their home centre even if they plan to stay on the team they were grandfathered to.

Truth:

·         If the player was grandfathered and played with the same team in 2017 that they played for in 2016 then they may continue to stay there as long as he does not change teams.
