Super Sunday for Minor Bantam AE
Submitted By Heather Scott on Monday, April 8, 2013
The weekend of April 5 – 7, 2013, proved to be a busy and exciting 3 days for the members of the Ajax Knights Minor Bantam AE hockey team. Competing in the Doug Thomson Memorial Hockey Tournament in Milton was the team’s final outing for the year and they were looking forward to the opportunity to play some great hockey to finish up their season.

Coming off an exciting underdog victory over the Whitby Wildcats to win the Lakeshore League Championship 3 games to 1, the Ajax M/B AE team, led by Coach Lyle Shulist was invited to play in a York-Simcoe vs. Lakeshore inter-league challenge game against the York-Simcoe Minor Bantam AE Champs, the Stouffville Clippers. This exhibition game was scheduled for Sunday, April 7th, right smack between Ajax’s last game of the tournament round robin and the tournament championship game. Confident in his team’s ability, Shulist accepted the challenge game and set out to ensure that the boys would have the rare opportunity to play in two championship games in one day!

The first hurdle was to come in first or second in the tournament so they would qualify to play in the tournament championship.  On April 5th, the M/B AE boys battled Guelph to a 2-1 victory and later that day beat Brampton 7-1.  Goalies Matthew Crane and Jeremy Jackson each played outstanding games to help secure these wins!  On Saturday, the team faced Richmond Hill in what turned out to be the first of two meetings of these teams.  Ajax came out strong in the first period, leading the game 2-0, but Richmond Hill proved to be a tough competitor and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Starting out on what the team now refers to as “Super Sunday,” Ajax faced Milton in their fourth game of the tournament round robin.  Under the strong leadership of Team Captain Allen Newman, Ajax fought hard and won the game 4-1, thanks to the solid work by Newman and his co-defenders Connor Shulist, Dylan Ouderkirk, Kyle Molinari, Peter Benedetto, and Taylor Shane.

After securing their spot in the tournament championship game, the Ajax M/B AE families jumped in their cars and rushed from Milton to Stouffville to arrive just in time to start the York-Simcoe versus Lakeshore inter-league Championship game. The Clippers and Knights were clearly evenly matched teams and the level of hockey played in this game was outstanding! Each of the Ajax offensive lines executed solid team-work and passing plays. The three lines featured Lucas Lorefice, Vincent Laszlo, Cody Scott, Troy Pugh, Ryan Thompson, Patrick Gummer, Nicolas Hamel, Cameron Searle and Mitchell Valentine. All three lines contributed 2 goals each to help the team win the game 6-5.

With little time to spare, the team headed back to Milton to hit the ice for the third game of the day and final game of the season. With two wins already under their belt, Ajax demonstrated confidence and skill as they battled Richmond Hill in another closely matched game.  At the final buzzer, Ajax was victorious with a lone goal, beating Richmond Hill 1-0 and bringing home a gold medal and their first tournament championship of the season. All would agree that this was most certainly a Super Sunday for the Ajax Knights Minor Bantam AE team!

The team would like to recognize and thank everyone who helped them achieve their success this season including their sponsor the Portly Piper of Ajax, their parents and siblings who cheered and supported them in the stands and especially the coaching staff Lyle Shulist, Bill Shane, Claude Hamel and Greg Gummer, Treasurer Pam Gummer and Manager Heather Scott.

Way to go – Ajax Knights 1999 AE’s – we are so proud of you!
